Where to eat near Novo Sancti Petri and La Barrosa: a relaxed guide for visitors

If you are spending a few days near Novo Sancti Petri or around Sancti Petri, you have probably already noticed what makes this stretch of the Costa de la Luz so special: a vast beach of golden sand, an enormous sky and a pace that gently invites you to slow down. La Barrosa, in Chiclana de la Frontera, is one of those beaches best enjoyed on foot, in no hurry, with the sea always in view. And as so often happens on holiday, sooner or later the most practical question of all arrives: where can you eat well around here, without any fuss?

This guide is written for exactly that. No endless lists, no overblown promises. Just a little context about the area, a sense of when it is worth heading down to the promenade, and how a place like ours fits into a day at the beach.

What the area is like: the promenade, the beach and the holiday rhythm

La Barrosa is a wide beach that runs for several kilometres, with a seafront promenade following it almost the whole way. From the hotels in Novo Sancti Petri you can reach the seafront in just a few minutes by car or, if you fancy stretching your legs, with a gentle stroll along the shore. It is a very family-friendly area, made for visitors who have come to switch off: swimmers in the morning, people walking at sunset and plenty of terraces looking out over the water.

The lovely thing about being here is that you do not need a rigid plan. The beach sets the pace. In the morning you feel like an unhurried breakfast; at midday, sitting down to lunch with your feet almost in the sand; and in the late afternoon, a cold drink as the sun begins to dip. It is worth knowing, though, that this part of the coast is above all a daytime destination: what works best is arranging your meals and your moments of rest around the daylight rather than the night.

When to come: from breakfast to sunset

We are a daytime spot, and we say so with pride. We are open Thursday to Tuesday, 09:30 to 19:30, and closed on Wednesdays. That means we are here for the moments best enjoyed in natural light: a relaxed breakfast as you arrive at the beach, lunch at midday, a drink in the afternoon, or that golden hour before the sun sets over the sea.

La Rúcula Gastrobar sits right on the Paseo Marítimo, Local 6, Pista 1, on La Barrosa beach itself. We have a terrace with sea views, and if there is one thing we are known for it is the sunsets: few things feel better than ending the day with a drink facing the water, with no clock and no noise. As we are not a late-night dinner venue, the best way to picture us is as that meeting point during the day, not in the small hours.

What you will eat: Cádiz seafood with an Argentine soul

Our cooking is Mediterranean and Andalusian, with an Argentine soul, and that blend sums us up rather well. On one side, the sea of Cádiz: cazón en adobo (marinated dogfish), choco (cuttlefish), boquerones, tortillita de camarón (shrimp fritters), puntillitas and papas aliñadas. This is the famous pescaíto, the local tradition of beautifully fried fish that so defines this region. If you have never tried it, this is a good place to start.

On the other side is the Argentine grill: vacío (flank steak), entraña (skirt steak), lagarto ibérico, choripán and our chimichurri, along with empanadas and provolone to share. In between, you will find presa ibérica, croquettes, salads, burgers, a children's menu and homemade desserts. To drink, there are local wines such as manzanilla and fino, cocktails and smoothies. We have gluten-free bread available and we mark the vegetarian and gluten-free dishes on the menu, so it is easy to find something for everyone at the table. We sit in a €€ price range: not a one-off splurge, nor an airport sandwich, but something meant to be enjoyed at a calm pace.

How to get here and reserve

Getting here is straightforward: we are on the La Barrosa promenade, a few minutes from the hotels in Novo Sancti Petri and Sancti Petri, whether by car or on foot along the sea. We are a family-friendly place with room for children, and at your table you will find a QR code to browse the menu comfortably on your phone, in your own language.

If you want to be sure of a table, especially on the terrace at sunset, the best thing is to book by WhatsApp or through our website. That is all it takes. Come with the rhythm of the beach, in no hurry, and let the day do the rest. We will be waiting for you, facing the sea.
